Galerie Gurlitt

Galerie Gurlitt was a private art collection assembled by Cornelius Gurlitt, a German art dealer, containing thousands of artworks, some of which were potentially looted or stolen by the Nazis during World War II. Discovered in his Munich apartment in 2012, the collection raised significant questions about provenance and the ethics of ownership. It provided insights into the extent of Nazi-era art theft and prompted investigations into rightful ownership. The collection was later exhibited and studied to address issues of cultural restitution and the restitution process for stolen art from that period.
