Gabriel Lalemant

Gabriel Lalemant was a 17th-century Jesuit priest and missionary, originally from France, known for his work among Indigenous peoples in New France (modern-day Canada). He dedicated his life to spreading Christianity and supporting Indigenous communities. In 1649, during a period of conflict known as the Iroquois Wars, Lalemant was captured and martyred—meaning he died for his faith—by the Iroquois. His legacy includes his commitment to cultural understanding and religious outreach, and he is remembered as a martyr and important figure in the history of Jesuit missions in North America.
