Göttingen Seven

The Göttingen Seven were a group of seven German university professors—most notably mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss—who in 1837 protested against the King of Hanover’s attempt to assert state control over university autonomy. Their opposition was centered around maintaining academic independence and opposing government interference. As a consequence of their protest, they faced dismissal from their positions, which made them symbols of defending intellectual freedom and academic self-governance. Their stand highlighted the importance of academic independence in fostering free research and debate, influencing future discussions on academic rights and freedoms.
