Functional MRI (fMRI) is a brain imaging technique that measures changes in blood flow to different areas of the brain. When a brain region is active, it requires more oxygen, leading to increased blood flow. The fMRI detects these changes by measuring differences in the magnetic properties of oxygen-rich versus oxygen-poor blood.
