Functional Communication Training
Functional Communication Training (FCT) is a behavioral strategy that teaches individuals alternative ways to communicate their needs or feelings effectively. Instead of using maladaptive behaviors like tantrums or aggression, a person learns to use appropriate words, gestures, or other signals to express themselves. FCT is based on understanding the reason behind problematic behaviors—such as hunger, frustration, or attention-seeking—and replacing those behaviors with better communication methods. This approach helps improve social interactions, reduces challenging behaviors, and promotes more effective, respectful communication in everyday life.
