Fuel rods

Fuel rods are long, thin tubes made of materials like zirconium that contain nuclear fuel, typically uranium or plutonium. They are used in nuclear reactors to generate energy through controlled nuclear fission, where atoms split and release heat. The heat produced heats water, creating steam that drives turbines to generate electricity. Fuel rods are arranged in the reactor core and are designed to withstand high radiation and heat. Over time, the fuel atoms get used up and produce radioactive waste, so they are periodically replaced and safely managed to ensure the reactor operates efficiently and safely.
