Frost heaving occurs when the moisture in the soil freezes and expands, causing the ground to lift or deform. This process is common in colder climates where the water in the soil, especially around plant roots or within the soil pores, turns to ice during winter. As the ice forms, it creates pressure that pushes the soil upward, sometimes causing cracks or uneven surfaces. When the ice melts, the soil may settle unevenly. Frost heaving can damage structures, roads, and planted vegetation by shifting the ground unexpectedly.
