Front Islamique du Salut

The Front Islamique du Salut (FIS) was a prominent Islamist political and paramilitary organization in Algeria during the early 1990s. It emerged as a reaction to the country’s move towards a more democratic system, which threatened the group's goal of establishing an Islamic state. FIS sought to promote Islamic principles through political participation, but it also resorted to violence and armed conflict when the government banned its activities in 1992. Their actions contributed to a brutal civil war in Algeria, lasting through the 1990s, marked by widespread violence and political instability.
