French Mandate for Syria

The French Mandate for Syria was a League of Nations agreement after World War I, where France was authorized to govern parts of the Ottoman Empire’s former territory, including modern-day Syria and Lebanon. Established in 1920, it aimed to oversee administration, development, and stability, but effectively placed Syria under French control, reducing its independence. The mandate lasted until 1946, when Syria gained full independence. This period involved political restructuring, infrastructure development, but also resistance and nationalist movements seeking sovereignty from colonial rule.
