French India
French India was a collection of small territories in India, such as Pondicherry, that were controlled by France from the 17th century until 1954. These enclaves operated as French colonies within the largely British-ruled Indian subcontinent. Over time, political discussions and independence movements arose, leading France to progressively cede control. By 1954, most of these territories reunited with India, ending French colonial presence in the region. Today, Pondicherry (Puducherry) remains a Union Territory of India, reflecting its French heritage through architecture, culture, and legal systems.
