French Fourth Republic

The French Fourth Republic was the government of France from 1946 to 1958, established after World War II. It was characterized by a parliamentary system with frequent changes in government due to political fragmentation. Despite economic recovery and reforms, it struggled with political instability and decolonization challenges, especially in Indochina and Algeria. Its constitutional structure made forming stable governments difficult, leading to multiple short-lived administrations. The Fourth Republic ended when Charles de Gaulle returned to power and helped draft a new constitution, establishing the Fifth Republic in 1958.
