Freetown War Crimes Tribunal
The Freetown War Crimes Tribunal, officially known as the Special Court for Sierra Leone, was established in 2002 to prosecute individuals for serious crimes committed during the Sierra Leone Civil War (1991-2002). Based in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, it aimed to address atrocities like war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the use of child soldiers and brutal attacks on civilians. The tribunal operated jointly with Sierra Leonean courts, emphasizing justice and reconciliation in a post-conflict society. Notably, it became known for convicting key figures, including former Liberian President Charles Taylor.
