Free, Prior and Informed Consent
Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a process that ensures communities, especially Indigenous peoples, have a genuine say before any project or activity that affects their land, resources, or way of life begins. "Free" means no coercion or manipulation; "Prior" indicates they are consulted before decisions are made; and "Informed" ensures they receive clear, complete information about what the project involves, risks, and benefits. FPIC respects communities’ rights to make choices about their environment and culture, promoting fair and respectful engagement in development processes.
