Franz Ferdinand and Sophie
Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of Austria-Este and heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a major European power. Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, was his wife. Their assassination on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip sparked tensions between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, ultimately leading to the outbreak of World War I. Their deaths highlighted the fragile political alliances and escalating nationalism in Europe at the time. Their tragic end is often seen as a catalyst for the war that reshaped 20th-century history.
