Franco-American Treaty of 1778

The Franco-American Treaty of 1778 was an agreement between France and the United States during the American Revolution. France officially recognized the U.S. as an independent nation and promised to support its fight against Britain by providing military aid, supplies, and funds. In return, the U.S. agreed to certain protections for French colonies and to consult France on future conflicts. This treaty was crucial in strengthening the American cause, helping secure French assistance that ultimately contributed to the colonies' victory. It marked one of the first formal alliances for the newly independent United States.
