Francis Meres

Francis Meres was a 16th-century English writer and cleric best known for his work "Psalmes or Poemes of John Milton," and notably for his 1598 book "Palladis Tamia" (Wits' Commonwealth). In this book, he provided one of the earliest literary comparisons of William Shakespeare and other contemporary authors, recognizing Shakespeare's talent and contributions to English drama. Meres' observations helped preserve early knowledge of Shakespeare's work and influenced future literary criticism. His writings offer valuable insight into the literary culture of Elizabethan England and the recognition of Shakespeare's emerging reputation during his lifetime.
