Francis Dashwood
Francis Dashwood (1708–1781) was a British politician and founder of the Hellfire Club, an exclusive, often notorious society known for its irreverent gatherings and humorous, sometimes controversial activities in 18th-century England. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and was involved in literary and cultural circles. Dashwood was also a philanthropist and a supporter of the arts. His reputation is linked to his flamboyant lifestyle and the secretive nature of the club, which aimed to challenge social conventions and promote free thought and camaraderie among its members.
