Fragments of Sappho

Fragments of Sappho are surviving pieces of poetry written by the ancient Greek poet Sappho, who lived around the 7th century BCE. Because much of her work has been lost over time, what we have are only small excerpts or lines, often incomplete. These fragments reveal her themes of love, desire, beauty, and personal reflection, written in lyrical, emotionally expressive language. Despite their incomplete nature, they offer valuable insights into early Greek poetry and the personal voice of one of history’s most influential female poets.
