Fox Sisters
The Fox Sisters were two American sisters, Maggie and Kate, credited with popularizing spiritualism in the 19th century. In 1848, they claimed to communicate with spirits through mysterious rappings and knocking sounds, sparking widespread interest in the idea of contacting the dead. Their demonstrations led to a spiritualist movement that influenced religion, folklore, and entertainment. However, later investigations revealed that the sisters had confessed to producing the sounds by cracking their toe joints, exposing their initial acts as tricks. Despite this, their role in the rise of spiritualism remains historically significant.
