Fourth Republic

The Fourth Republic refers to a period of French history from 1946 to 1958, characterized by a parliamentary system with a weak executive and a strong legislature. It was established after World War II to rebuild France's government, but faced political instability, frequent changes in government, and challenges related to decolonization. The instability eventually led to dissatisfaction, culminating in the 1958 military-led crisis that prompted the creation of the Fifth Republic, with a stronger presidential role, under Charles de Gaulle. The Fourth Republic is often seen as a time of democratic renewal hampered by systemic weaknesses.
