Fortifications (Paris)
The Fortifications of Paris were a series of defensive walls built around the city in the 19th century, primarily to protect against invasions and maintain order. Initially constructed in the early 1800s, the most famous was the Thiers Wall built between 1841 and 1848, enclosing the expanding city. These fortifications consisted of massive walls, forts, and defensive structures. When the city grew beyond these boundaries, the fortifications were eventually dismantled in the early 20th century to allow for urban development. Today, remnants of these walls are visible in some parts of Paris and have influenced the city's layout.
