Fort Wayne Treaty

The Fort Wayne Treaty of 1809 was an agreement between the United States and several Native American tribes, primarily the Delaware, Miami, and Chippewa. Under this treaty, the tribes ceded large areas of land in Indiana and surrounding regions to the U.S., in exchange for reimbursement, promises of annuities, and smaller land reservations to live on. The treaty aimed to facilitate American expansion and settlement in the Northwest Territory but resulted in the loss of traditional lands for the tribes, contributing to subsequent tensions and conflicts in the region.
