Former South Vietnam

Former South Vietnam refers to the country of Vietnam when it was divided after the Vietnam War, from 1954 to 1975. It was officially called the Republic of Vietnam and was supported by the United States and other anti-communist nations. Its capital was Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City). The division ended in 1975 when the communist North Vietnam won the war and reunified the country under a single government. Today, the region is part of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The term highlights a period of political division and conflict in Vietnamese history.
