Forest degradation

Forest degradation refers to the decline in a forest’s health and quality, resulting in reduced biodiversity, diminished ability to provide resources, and weakened ecosystem functions. It occurs when forests are repeatedly disturbed or overused—such as through illegal logging, agriculture, or pollution—that damage trees, soil, and wildlife without completely cutting down the entire forest. Unlike deforestation, which involves clearing large areas, degradation involves gradual deterioration, making the forest less resilient and less able to support plants, animals, and human needs. It poses significant environmental challenges, including increased vulnerability to climate change and loss of ecosystem services.
