Forced disappearances
Forced disappearances occur when authorities or groups unlawfully detain individuals and then refuse to acknowledge their detention or whereabouts. Often, victims are taken against their will, and their families are left without information, causing severe psychological and social distress. These acts violate human rights and hinder justice, as victims are often subjected to abuse, mistreatment, or worse. Such practices are used as tools of oppression, suppression of dissent, or during conflicts, instilling fear within communities and undermining trust in institutions. International laws condemn forced disappearances and seek accountability for perpetrators.
