Force Publique
The Force Publique was a colonial military and police force established by Belgium in the Congo during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its role was to enforce colonial rule, maintain order, and protect Belgian interests in the region. Comprised of African conscripts led by European officers, the force was involved in controlling the population and, historically, was associated with harsh treatment and abuses. After Congo gained independence in 1960, the Force Publique was replaced by the country's national military. It played a significant part in the colonial administration's efforts to dominate and exploit the Congo.
