Foot and ankle anatomy
The foot and ankle form a complex structure that supports your body weight, allows movement, and helps with balance. The ankle is where the foot connects to the leg, with bones called tibia and fibula forming the joint. The foot consists of 26 bones, including the heel bone (calcaneus), ankle bones (talus), and smaller bones forming the arch and toes. Ligaments and tendons hold these bones together and enable motion like walking and running. Muscles in the foot help maintain balance and adapt to various surfaces, making this structure essential for mobility and stability.
