Folding refers to the process by which a protein achieves its functional three-dimensional structure. Inside a cell, a newly made chain of amino acids "folds" into a specific shape, driven by chemical interactions, to become an active protein. Proper folding is essential because it determines how the protein works. The process is highly dynamic and precise; incorrect folding can lead to malfunction or disease.
