flip turn

A flip turn is a technique swimmers use to change direction quickly at the end of a pool or lane. As they approach the wall, the swimmer gradually reduces speed, then somersaults forward into a tight ball (a flip) to reverse their direction. They push off the wall with their feet, streamlined, to glide smoothly in the opposite direction. This method minimizes stopping time and maintains momentum, making it efficient for competitive swimming. It's a skill that combines body control, timing, and agility, crucial for faster, more fluid laps.
