Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)

Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a diagnostic procedure used to assess how well a person swallows. A healthcare provider inserts a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope through the nose into the throat to directly observe the swallowing process. During the exam, the person may be asked to swallow different foods and liquids to identify any problems, such as food or liquid going into the airway instead of the stomach. FEES helps clinicians diagnose swallowing difficulties, determine their cause, and develop effective treatment plans to improve safety and nutrition.
