Five permanent members (P5)
The five permanent members, known as the P5, are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These countries are part of the United Nations Security Council and hold special authority: they can veto any substantive resolution, meaning they can prevent the council from passing decisions, including those related to peace and security. The P5 were originally the victors of World War II and are recognized as major nuclear powers. Their role is to maintain international peace, and their veto power reflects their status as influential global players with significant military and diplomatic capabilities.
