Fischler Reform

The Fischler Reform, introduced by then-EC Food and Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler in 2000, aimed to modernize the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). It shifted focus from guaranteed price support to promoting sustainable agriculture, environmental health, and rural development. The reform encouraged farmers to produce in line with market demands, reduced direct subsidies based on land, and promoted greener, more competitive farming practices. Its goal was to make EU agriculture more efficient, environmentally friendly, and adaptable to global changes, ensuring the sector remains viable while supporting rural communities and conservation efforts.
