First Nigerian President
The first President of Nigeria was Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, often called "Zik." He played a key role in Nigeria's fight for independence from British rule and was a prominent nationalist leader. Although Nigeria became independent in 1960 with its first Prime Minister, Azikiwe became the ceremonial President when Nigeria adopted a republican constitution in 1963, making him the nation's first President in a republican sense. He is respected for his contributions to Nigerian sovereignty and leadership in fostering national unity.
