First Governor-General of Nigeria
The first Governor-General of Nigeria was Lord Louis Maitland Grove, serving from Nigeria’s independence in 1960 until 1963. As the Queen’s representative, his role was to oversee the transition from British colonial rule to an independent Nigerian government, ensuring a smooth transfer of power and maintaining stability. The position was largely ceremonial, symbolizing Nigeria's sovereignty while still recognizing the British monarch. After Nigeria became a republic in 1963, the role of the Governor-General was replaced by the President, marking Nigeria's full independence as a republic.
