First Chechen War
The First Chechen War (1994-1996) was a conflict between Russia and Chechnya, a region seeking independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia aimed to maintain control over Chechnya’s efforts towards independence, leading to a brutal military campaign. The war involved heavy fighting, urban destruction, and significant civilian suffering. Despite initial Russian advances, Chechen fighters used guerrilla tactics, making it difficult for Russian forces to secure the region. The war ended with a peace treaty granting Chechnya de facto independence, but tensions and violence would re-emerge later.
