First base is the position in baseball responsible for covering the area near first base, which is the first of the four bases laid out in a diamond-shaped field. The player at first base often receives throws from teammates to get opposing players out when they try to run to first after hitting the ball. They also play a key role in fielding ground balls, catching throws, and assisting in plays to prevent runners from advancing.
