Firearms Owners Protection Act
The Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA), enacted in 1986, is a U.S. law that governs the regulation of firearms and ammunition. It clarifies the rights of gun owners, limits the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) authority over guns during interstate transport, and prohibits certain types of firearm restrictions. FOPA also includes provisions to prevent the confiscation of guns during emergencies and safeguards lawful gun owners from overly restrictive laws, promoting lawful ownership while maintaining some federal oversight.
