Finnish Repository (ONKALO)
The Finnish Repository, known as ONKALO, is an underground facility near Olkiluoto designed to safely store Finland's spent nuclear fuel. It's carved deep into granite bedrock, providing a stable, long-term containment for radioactive waste. The storage system involves sealing the waste in corrosion-resistant containers, then depositing them in tunnels kilometers below the surface. This approach minimizes environmental risk and isolates radioactive materials from living areas, ensuring safety for thousands of years. ONKALO is a key part of Finland’s strategy for responsible nuclear waste management, combining advanced engineering with thorough safety measures.
