The Finnish Repository, known as ONKALO, is an underground facility near Olkiluoto designed to safely store Finland's spent nuclear fuel. It's carved deep into granite bedrock, providing a stable, long-term containment for radioactive waste. The storage system involves sealing the waste in corrosion-resistant containers, then depositing them in tunnels kilometers below the surface. This approach minimizes environmental risk and isolates radioactive materials from living areas, ensuring safety for thousands of years.
