Finnish Repository for Spent Nuclear Fuel (ONKALO)
ONKALO is a deep underground research facility in Finland designed for storing used nuclear fuel safely. It is part of the Onkalo spent fuel repository project and extends about 500 meters below the surface. The purpose is to test and develop technologies for safely isolating radioactive waste from the environment for thousands of years. Waste is sealed in durable containers and placed into stable bedrock tunnels, ensuring it remains isolated from people and nature. ONKALO serves as a model for long-term nuclear waste management, prioritizing safety, environmental protection, and security.
