Finney Settlement

The Finney Settlement was an agreement in 2014 where the U.S. government compensated Bitcoin investors who lost funds due to a hacking attack on the Mt. Gox exchange, which was once the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange. The settlement aimed to resolve legal claims from users who had their Bitcoin stolen during the hack, by providing a framework for the exchange to distribute available assets fairly among affected customers. It helped provide some financial relief and clarified the legal responsibilities of Mt. Gox’s operators, contributing to better protections for cryptocurrency users in similar cases.
