filarial worm

Filarial worms are tiny parasitic worms that live in the lymphatic system or subcutaneous tissues of humans and animals. Transmitted through bites of infected mosquitoes or other insects, these worms can cause diseases like lymphatic filariasis, leading to swelling and disfigurement, or others that result in skin nodules. The adult worms produce microscopic larvae called microfilariae, which circulate in the bloodstream or skin, continuing the cycle of infection. Treatment often involves antiparasitic medications, and prevention focuses on controlling mosquito populations and reducing bites.
