fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disorder where soft tissues like muscles, tendons, and ligaments gradually turn into bone. This process causes progressive movement restriction and skeletal deformities. People with FOP often experience flare-ups triggered by injuries, leading to new bone formation in areas that normally move. Over time, this abnormal bone growth can significantly impair mobility, making normal movement difficult or impossible. FOP does not affect the brain or internal organs directly. It is caused by a mutation in a specific gene that controls bone development, and there is currently no cure.
