fibrin degradation products
Fibrin degradation products (FDPs) are small pieces of proteins that result when the body breaks down blood clots. When a clot forms to stop bleeding, it’s made of fibrin. As the body dissolves the clot afterward, enzymes cut it into fragments, which include FDPs. Measuring FDP levels helps doctors determine if there’s abnormal clotting or excessive clot breakdown happening in the body, which can occur in conditions like blood clotting disorders, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), or certain clot-related diseases. Elevated FDPs indicate active clot formation and breakdown, providing valuable diagnostic information.
