Fiber Type Classification
Fiber type classification groups muscle fibers based on their characteristics such as speed, strength, and endurance. There are mainly three types: Type I (slow-twitch), which are endurance fibers suited for long-lasting activities; Type IIa (fast-twitch, oxidative), which combine strength and endurance; and Type IIb (fast-twitch, glycolytic), which provide quick, powerful movements but fatigue quickly. Understanding these types helps explain why some muscles excel at endurance while others generate force rapidly. This classification informs training approaches and athletic performance, highlighting the body's adaptation to different physical demands.
