Ferroptosis

Ferroptosis is a form of programmed cell death that happens when cells experience excessive damage from a buildup of iron and destructive molecules called free radicals. Unlike other types of cell death, ferroptosis is characterized by the breakdown of cell membranes due to oxidative stress, particularly lipid (fat) oxidation. It plays roles in various health conditions, including neurodegeneration and cancer. Understanding ferroptosis helps researchers explore new ways to treat diseases by controlling this iron-dependent cell death process, either promoting it to kill harmful cells or preventing it to protect healthy tissues.
