Fens

Fens are a type of low-lying wetland found mainly in parts of northern Europe, characterized by peat-rich soils and abundant water. They form in areas with poor drainage, where water accumulates from rainfall and groundwater, creating soggy, nutrient-rich environments. Fens support diverse plant and animal life and often have a mix of grasses, sedges, and mosses. They play an important role in ecosystems by filtering water, storing carbon, and providing habitat for wildlife. Many fens are protected for their ecological significance and biodiversity.
