femoral component

The femoral component is a part used in hip replacement surgery that replaces the damaged or arthritic top of the thigh bone (femur). It is a metal piece shaped to fit into the hollow center of the removed femoral head. Its purpose is to restore hip function by providing a smooth surface for the new artificial ball-and-socket joint. The femoral component usually includes a stem that fits into the bone and a ball that replaced the natural femoral head, working together with the socket component in the pelvis to allow seamless movement.
