Federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Program
The Federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Program, established in 1968, aims to protect free-flowing rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, or recreational values. It designates certain rivers or river segments as "wild," "scenic," or "recreational," ensuring they remain unspoiled and accessible for public enjoyment and ecological health. The program restricts dam construction and other development that could harm these rivers, balancing conservation with responsible use. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and other agencies, it helps preserve these natural waterways for future generations while allowing recreational activities like fishing, boating, and sightseeing.
