Federal Insurance Administration (FIA)
The Federal Insurance Administration (FIA) was a division of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare created in 1960 to oversee and coordinate federal insurance programs. Its role included managing insurance policies related to health, health-related services, and social welfare programs, ensuring effective administration and policy implementation. The FIA helped facilitate the development of programs like Medicare and Medicaid, aiming to improve access to health coverage for Americans. In 1970, its responsibilities were absorbed into the broader Health Care Financing Administration (now part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services).
