Federal election of Germany
Germany’s federal election determines the composition of the Bundestag, the national parliament. Citizens aged 18 and over vote for political parties, which then propose candidates for parliament. A mixed-member proportional system is used: voters cast two votes—one for a direct candidate in their district and one for a party list. The overall seat distribution in the Bundestag reflects the proportion of votes each party receives, ensuring fair representation. The party or coalition with the majority forms the government, and the Chancellor, the head of government, is usually the leader of the leading party or coalition.
